Aranya Sri’ Launched in Polavaram District to Empower Tribal Women

Rampachodavaram, May 16: Polavaram District Collector K. Dinesh Kumar on Saturday launched the pilot project “Aranya Sri – Prosperity Through Forest” at Gondigudem village in Chintoor mandal to promote bamboo harvesting, sustainable livelihoods and forest-based economic empowerment for tribal women through Self-Help Groups.

The Collector said the programme was launched under the directions of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to improve tribal livelihoods through innovative forest-based initiatives. As part of the project, bamboo cultivation and bamboo-based products would be promoted in 15 villages under two forest divisions, with plans to raise nearly one lakh bamboo plants.

He said 50 percent of the income generated from the project would be provided to SHG women. Special training would also be given to women in making bamboo-based household items, handicrafts, baskets and furniture for marketing purposes.

ST Commission Chairman S Bojji Reddy said the project would help tribal women achieve financial independence through self-employment opportunities. ITDA Project Officer Shubham Nokwal said the pilot project would create additional income opportunities for women in tribal areas.

Tribal cultural performances and plantation activities were also organised during the programme.
